New Zealand’s North Island – A Unique Holiday Experience

Author: Marc Weiss

Source: articledashboard.com

Travelers to New Zealand’s North Island can expect unique scenery and adventures beckoning around every corner.

The North and the South Island of New Zealand are very diverse regarding scenery and geographical makeup. The North Island is warm and with a scenery scope from sandy beaches, through rolling farmland to active volcanic peaks. It is home of about 73 percent of the nation's population and is maybe best recognized for the unique volcanic plateau at its centre. The North Island (115000sq km) is home to Auckland, the nation's largest city, and Rotorua, the current centre for the Maori culture.

Let’s have a look at two very famous areas of the North Island the Coromandel Peninsula and Rotorua.

The Coromandel Region of New Zealand is truly a special place, a short drive outside Auckland city. Coromandel is located east of Auckland, on the east coast of the North Island. This region is one of New Zealand's leading coastal holiday destinations due to the wonderful white sandy beaches and sunny weather of the area. It is portrayed as rustic, relaxed, magnificent and unspoiled. On the arrival of the Europeans in New Zealand Coromandel Peninsula was covered in kauri forest, and many huge trees grew there. Coromandel is the name of a town and harbour on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula. The town of Coromandel is lovely and old. Coromandel stands for New Zealand's intact beauty displaying natural world as it was meant to be.

Rotorua is located near the centre of New Zealand's North Island. It sits on the shores of Lake Rotorua and several other lakes are nearby. You will find a great variety in Rotorua attractions, activities and culture which makes this place a very famous New Zealand tourist destination. Beside the geothermal wonders, there are also the more common water activities such as fishing and boating. Tourism is a key industry in Rotorua. Therefore the tourism services are well developed. This region is the centre of Maori Culture and thermal activity for New Zealand. We recommend exploring the geothermal wonders of Rotorua. Enjoy the natural spas, geysers, hot pools and bubbling mud pools Rotorua has to offer. It has the most energetic thermal activity in the country. Afterwards it might be interesting to take in a Maori hangi (a method of cooking in an outdoor pit oven) and concert.

Why Take a Camper Van Hire Holiday in New Zealand?

Author: Merav Benaia

Source: ezinearticles.com

Booking a holiday to New Zealand can be a very exciting time. Once you have booked your flights, you'll lie awake at night wondering how on earth you are going to fit in all of the adventures, attractions and sights that you have heard about and researched, into your trip. Perhaps you have considered booking a tour guide or coach tour? Great idea, but if you really want to explore in your own time and only with the people you are travelling with, why not consider camper van hire?

If you are travelling from overseas, you are more than likely to fly into either Auckland or Christchurch, which are two of the main cities in New Zealand, from here the roads you choose to travel are up to you! Imagine yourself at the steering wheel, your friends or family with you all admiring the spectacular native bush as you drive around the Northland region or the golden beaches & blue seas of the Abel Tasman area, for instance. If you see something which you want to stop and take a look at, you can! If you change your mind along the way and decide that there is a location which is more your kind of place to stay than another, then book yourself into a holiday park, park your camper van and relax!

Of course, there's nothing wrong with staying in a motel / hotel accommodation and staying put for the time you are in this beautiful country, but getting out and about in a camper van lets you truly experience what is on offer. A lot of people choose to stay in the larger more well known cities of New Zealand but in doing so miss out on a lot of New Zealand's scenery and experiences. Often when you pick up your camper van hire the rental company can assist you with planning your travels to ensure that you don't miss out on the things that really interest you.

Search for camper vans for hire in New Zealand and you won't be disappointed at the options on offer. Just make sure that you book a camper van or two that allow enough sleeping room for the number of travellers in your group and you will find that you will have a holiday of a lifetime!

AllWays Rental - a family owned and operated camper van hire and car rental company located near both Christchurch & Auckland Airport's in New Zealand (NZ).

The variety of hire car options on offer are ideal for reliable runabout or business travel, for those looking for a luxury full size option or for those planning their dream self catering holiday or a week of skiing.

Author: Ian Bateman

Source: ezinearticles.com

New Zealand is a beautiful country that many people travel to simply to see the beauty that it holds. Fortunately, there are many different types of accommodation in the country to support all of these travellers. One of the most popular options, when it comes to lodging, is finding a luxury accommodation where people can kick back, relax, and let someone else worry about everything. There are plenty of luxury hotels and accommodations to choose from in New Zealand, and your specific choice will depend on where you are going and what you are looking for.

Keep in mind that if you're gunning for the best luxury accommodation in New Zealand, you will want to book early and you should expect to pay more. These rooms fill up fast, as travellers love to visit the country and enjoy themselves in luxurious rooms with stunning views. You will want to check out all of the facilities that are available and see which ones suit you best.

Here are some places that you can consider:

- Hotels are a great choice if you want luxury and don't need anything special. You can find many hotels and motels that offer top-rate accommodations in the country no matter where you are visiting.

- If you want something quainter or more private, consider a self contained unit rental, which will be essentially like renting a flat. You will be able to come and go as you please and enjoy the privacy that you're used to without having to worry about other guests so much.

- Probably the most popular luxury accommodation in New Zealand is the bed and breakfast option. There are literally hundreds of these destinations around the country, and finding the one that suits your specific needs is not a challenge. If you want something that is more cosy, romantic and personal, consider a b and b instead of a hotel.

It's all about choosing the luxury accommodation that suits YOU. After all, it is your holiday, and you're the one travelling hundreds (if not thousands) of kilometres to get to the beautiful country of New Zealand. Take the time to check out your options and choose the luxury accommodation in New Zealand that best suits your needs, desires, travel time, and budget. Speaking of budget, don't worry about spending a lot. In many cases, you can actually find luxury accommodations for bottom dollar prices.

Plan a New Zealand Wine Trail Holiday

Author: Gail Gillespie

Source: ezinearticles.com

Wine growing in New Zealand is still evolving and new areas are planting vines and producing an ever broadening selection of wine varieties with often excellent results. Wine is now one of the New Zealand's main exports.

Plan your New Zealand Wine Trail Holiday allowing time to spend a few days in several wine regions. Many wineries have their own restaurants and the gourmet food is usually excellent, as the menus are planned to compliment their wines. Some wineries have diversified growing olives and/or other gourmet food specialties. Each has their own architectural style and beautiful scenic surrounds.

Many wineries are in areas featuring beaches, bush or mountains, arts and crafts, historic townships and other attractions for you to enjoy.

If you are not keen to drink and drive - join an organised Wine Trail Day Tour in each location, for a comprehensive wine experience. Or drive yourself on mini tours... tasting the wines and gourmet foods many regions produce.

Vary it with a Winery Cycle Tour in Hawkes Bay or the Kayaking Wine Tour to Omata Estate in the Bay of Islands - and you have the makings of a wonderfully varied and exciting holiday.

I have found that many wine makers love to chat and share their vast knowledge of the wines they lovingly craft...for it is a craft. New Zealander's are generally innovative and prepared to try new ideas. This shines through in some areas of their wine making too.

The areas listed could all be visited as part of a tour throughout New Zealand. Alternatively you could choose to just tour either the North Island or South Island sections. I have selected the main wine growing areas.......and a suggested route that takes you systematically through the country.

Kerikeri - Northland is not a major wine area but there are a few good wineries. Marsden Estate and Cottle Hill are two wineries well worth visiting in Kerikeri. Both also have good restaurants.

Auckland - Matakana - Waiheke Island -West Auckland- Clevedon - There are many areas around Auckland where wine growing is a feature. Matakana is an hour north of the city and there are several good wineries here. Take a day or two and tour the area. With beautiful beaches, potteries, and Matakana township which has an excellent Farmers Market on a Saturday, there is plenty to fill your time in between wine tastings. Waiheke Island has many excellent wineries with some acclaimed labels. Either do a Day Wine Tour or spend a few days on the island with a car. Some of the wineries are a little off the beaten track......with glorious views. You can pick up rental cars from the wharf or take your car across on the Sealink ferry. West Auckland - is one of Auckland's oldest wine growing regions with many well established vineyards planted by the many Croatian families that emigrated to the area. Transport is essential. Kumeu, Henderson and Oratia are home to some of New Zealand's most well known labels. Artisan's Winery - Oratia has a great restaurant and their wines are supurb. South Auckland does not have such a wide choice of wineries but there are a handful around Clevedon. - I recommend Vin Alto as an interesting winery. You can have a wine tasting or enjoy a degustation meal with wine to match, which is a fabulous experience with much of the produce...... even the venison grown on the property. Their limoncello liquor is delicious!

Hawkes Bay - is one of New Zealand's top wine growing regions with Chardonnay and Bordeaux style red wines their most widely produced. This area has wine, food, art trails and Art Deco Napier to keep any tourist happy for days! You will need transport to reach the many wineries which are spread out. For something different you can do a Bike Winery Tour. You will want to include some visits to the many gourmet food producers as you tour the region.

Gisborne - Known as the Chardonnay capital of New Zealand Gisborne has some excellent wines and wineries with the first grape vines planted as long ago as 1836.This is also an area producing internationally acclaimed gewertztraminer at Vinoptima.

Wairarapa - Martinborough - Best known for their excellent Pinot Noir, you could plan to stay a night or two and enjoy the gourmet food and wines in the region. Martinborough is a popular destination for a weekend break and wine tours being near to Wellington.

South Island

Marlborough - Nelson - Sauvignon Blanc is the trademark wine for this region and is considered by many internationally to be the best in the world - although their Pinot Noir is also becoming a flagship wine for the area. This region has much to keep you here for several days if you have time - with arts and crafts, hiking and kayaking the stunning Abel Tasman National Park, and beautiful beaches.

Canterbury - The oldest South Island wine area, Reisling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are some of the best wines in this region. Take a Wine Tour or drive yourself to Banks Peninsula or Waipara Valley. French Farm is a lovely winery for tasting and lunch.

Otago - This may be a relatively new wine growing area, and those who were the first to plant grapes here were told they were "mad"! However, they have had the last laugh as the wines in the region have won international acclaim. Pinot Noir and aromatic whites grow very well on the rocky hillsides. A wine tour will take you to several fascinating wineries from Waitiri Creek Winery based in an old Church to Gibbston Valley with it's wine cave.

With Queenstown and Wanaka central to the area, you will enjoy stunning scenery and find a plethora of exciting activities and attractions when you tire of wine tasting. Enjoy your New Zealand Wine Trail Holiday!

My name is Gail Gillespie...... a New Zealander who with my husband, travels frequently both internationally and throughout New Zealand and loves to include visits to a few wineries as part of my itinerary. With so many wonderful wineries and wines it has become a major interest. HERE I share my wine tasting experiences and recommendations and am continually adding new personal reviews on the different wine pages as yet another winery has been carefully accessed! Share my wealth of New Zealand travel experience as you plan your New Zealand Holiday.

New Zealand Nature Tour - A Journey Back in Time

Author: David Francis

Source: ezinearticles.com

New Zealand deservedly has a reputation as a tour destination that offers a unique natural history experience. The following article briefly explores some of the fundamental reasons why the nature of New Zealand is a journey back in time.

"New Zealand is as close as we will get to studying life on another planet" - Jared Diamond, US Ecologist.

As an island situated at the bottom of the world, New Zealand is isolated, and has been isolated for a very long time. The current scientific understanding is that the land mass of this country was originally joined to Australia, New Caledonia, and New Guinea about 80 million years ago. But then, due to the natural process of continental drift, New Zealand broke away from these other land masses, thereby sending it down a unique evolutionary path. Tellingly, this great separation occurred before many of the modern land mammals had evolved, resulting in a land mass unpopulated by any modern land mammals, apart from a bat species.

The timing of this separation has had a profound effect on the nature of New Zealand. Where mammals dominated the fauna of other land masses, birds dominated here, filling every niche from fierce predator, to forest floor scavenger. The lack of competition led many of our birds to evolve into flightless species. The best known of these, and the one to lend its name to many of our iconic features is of course the Kiwi.

The long isolation has also given rise to an inordinate number of endemic plants. Plant life has evolved in the absence of browsing mammals, further enhancing a unique evolutionary path. 93% of our alpine plants are endemic, over 80 % of the flowering plants occur nowhere else in the world, and our mighty podocarp forests have a lineage that stretches back 200 million years.

Orientated on a north south axis, New Zealand is very compact yet spans a wide range of climactic conditions. A tour that runs in this direction can, in a very short period of time, experience all of these conditions, and the unique features of nature that they have promoted.

The unique natural history of this country is well known and valued by New Zealand Government. The Department of Conservation runs cutting edge programs to conserve the remaining unique inhabitants of these islands. The also closely monitor and control tour operators through their Concession process in the hope of further enhancing the nature experience for all visitors.

New Zealand's Top Five Festivals

Author: Tony Maniscalco

Source: ezinearticles.com

New Zealand walking holidays up are suitable for all seasons, every month throwing different scenery into the mix. But it's not just New Zealand's scenery that changes on a seasonal basis; the country also has some vibrant and off-beat festivals that change with the seasons. Here are our top five:

Wildfoods Festival

Have you got an uncontrollable urge to snack on writhing witchetty grubs, or eat a blackened sheep's tail? If so you should arrange your New Zealand walking holiday for the month of March, when the Wildfoods Festival is in full swing in Hokitika. During the day you can dine on worm sushi and crunch on deep-fried grasshopper before joining the locals in a wild dance in the evening at Cass Square. All the unique food comes fresh from New Zealand's West Coast and all the produce is local. However, if you're of a sensitive disposition you might want to stick to the national dish of hangi-cooked roast lamb and vegetables.

Shepherd's Shemozzle

When walking New Zealand you can't fail to notice the sheer number of sheep. The country has around 9 sheep to every 1 human; but, in a country full of sheep, where are all the shepherds? Come October, they're all in Hunterville taking part in the annual Shepherd's Shemozzle. The Shepherd's Shemozzle is a race run by locals, but until the day of the event the locals don't know what's expected of them. Last year's event saw locals competing to eat dried weetabix and bull's testicles; could we be sensing a theme to New Zealand's festivals?

Englefield Bathtub Derby

Taking to the streets whilst lying in your bathtub might be your biggest nightmare, but in New Zealand it's just another of their bizarre festivals. In November, on Takapuna Bay, a fleet of unusually decorated bath-tubs takes to the water in a whole host of different shapes and designs. There are three separate races that entrants can compete in; a motorised boat race, a sail boat race or a pedal and paddle boat race. In the evening, there's a barbecue on the beach and a series of games like beach volleyball that will appeal to the whole family.

Matariki Festival

When you're walking New Zealand in June you'll probably come across the Maori New Year celebrations. The Matariki Festival in Auckland is a month of celebrations based on Maori culture and heritage. Events that guests might come across include traditional dance, exhibitions and tree-planting ceremonies.

Matariki occurs when the seven sisters are spotted and the first new moon is sighted, so the dates can change on an annual basis. However, the usual dates are from mid-June to the beginning of July.

Queenstown Winter Festival

When walking New Zealand's Queenstown, you'll notice a hubbub of culture, sophistication and the arts; that is unless you visit the city during the annual Winter Festival in July. At this time of the year the locals celebrate with a host of wacky events from frisbee tournaments to the dog derby, where farmers and their dogs are required to slide down the snow on their bottoms. Lake swimming in freezing waters is a test of strength for the locals and the festival culminates in some serious partying. If you've also always wanted to take a hot-air balloon flight then the festival is the place to experience this.

Tramping New Zealand's National Parks

Author: Tony Maniscalco

Source: ezinearticles.com

On the island nation of New Zealand, tramping isn't just a word but rather it is a national pastime enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. The word 'tramping' may be unknown to most people outside of the country, but the recreational activity is simply known elsewhere as hiking or bushwalking. To be more precise, tramping usually involves walking New Zealand's rugged terrain, carrying all the equipment needed for your trip. A night stay is usually a part of tramping and this can take the form of an overnight campout in one of New Zealand's National Parks. With fourteen national parks in total there are so many beautiful areas for you to explore on a New Zealand walking holiday. Here are our pick of the islands' best:

Mount Aspiring National Park

This national park located close to the city of Wanaka is named after the towering Mount Aspiring; one of the country's highest points. The park is one of the best places in New Zealand for walking and is a serene dreamland of glaciers, mountains and alpine lakes. The park has a number of tramping trails, some of which are more challenging than others. The three day Routeburn track is stunning, but visitors with less time on their hands should try the Aspiring Hut walk, a one and a half hour trek which takes you around the perimeter of Mount Aspiring. The park also has something for the more adventurous, and you could finish your tour with a jetboat ride along the River Dart or even a heli-skiing adventure in the Northern Buchanan region.

Fjordland

This area of New Zealand is almost Norwegian in appearance, with its U-shaped glaciers and towering snow-capped mountains. Spectacular waterfalls cascade down through the valley and these can be explored via sea kayak. On your kayaking trip you may be lucky enough to spot some of the park's local residents, dolphins, penguins and fur seals. This national park is the best in New Zealand for walking and of the country's ten 'Great Walks' three can be found in this very park. The most famous being the Milford Track, a five day trail which begins at the head of Lake Te Anau and ends at Milford Sound, from where it is possible to book a fjord cruise taking in the rest of the region.

Tongariro

Parts of the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy were shot on location at the Tongariro National Park. Therefore, visitors to this region can not only enjoy walking amongst vaguely familiar landscape but in doing so can hope to learn more about the volcanic past of New Zealand. Walking the Alpine Crossing in this national park attracts 70,000 visitors each summer and visitors to this region are awarded with breathtaking views of the three snow-covered volcanoes, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. The largest of these volcanoes Ruapehu played Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings and although all three volcanoes are still active, this doesn't stop thrill-seekers from skiing down their slopes or hiking up to their craters. The park is ideal for walking in and, as well as the Alpine Crossing, guests can also take part in the six day round the mountain walk, where guests can spot all kinds of native flora and fauna from long and short-tailed bats to the native birds that make their home in the national park.

How To Select A Good Car Hire For Travel Around New Zealand

Author: timothy

Source: articledashboard.com

Touring around naturally beautiful New Zealand by car is an exciting experience. You can hire your car from Auckland when you are in North Island. When you are in South Island, Christchurch is the place to hire your car rental. Travelling around New Zealand by car needs a few important things to be borne in mind before you plan one. We have highlighted a few important points pertaining to New Zealand car hire.

Is your car hire reliable?
Make sure your car hire is reliable by checking to see if the car rental company includes 24 hour AA (Automobile Association) roadside assistance. AA is a not-for-profit organisation which takes care of vehicle breakdowns giving you complete peace of mind when you travel around New Zealand. Does your car rental meet your needs?
Ensure that the car rental you intend to book meets your needs. When you contact the supplier, be specific about the model of the car you are looking for and your budget. Your supplier will have a wide range of cars to hire at different budgets, luxury levels and number of travellers the car is suited for.

Are you under the age of 21?
If you are below 21 years of age, it is VITAL to ensure that the car rental company you are using will permit you to drive the car. Most car hire companies in New Zealand prescribe 21 years as the minimum age to hire a car. So, ensure that your car rental company allows you to rent a car and check if there are any associated surcharges.

What is included in the car rate that you pay per day?
You must carefully check what is included with the daily rate you pay for your car rental. Make sure you contact your car hire company to find out the inclusions and the exclusions in the daily rate.

Do you need special requirements like baby seat etc?
If you are travelling with your baby, ensure that a baby seat can be fitted in the car that you are hiring. In addition, most car rental companies hire out baby seats.

Do you know the size of the car you need?
Be very careful in choosing the size of the car you are looking to rent. Be very specific on what type of car you are looking to hire.

Do you need a ferry service to transport your car?
If your tour of New Zealand covers both the North Island and South Island, you must make sure of your car hire company's policy on the ferry crossing between the islands. Some car rental companies have depots on either island (Wellington on North Island and Picton on South Island). Some companies do not and this means you have to take your car on the ferry. From travel experience, it is easier to take your vehicle on the ferry to the other side instead of giving up your vehicle on one side, travel to the other side, transfer your luggage to the new vehicle and do up new contracts.
At Ezy, we ensure that you, our valued customer, comes first and gets the best out of our car hire service to have the most memorable trip around New zealand. The highlights of our car rental service are:

• Ezy is a registered member of AA. In addition, Ezy offers a 24 hour replacement vehicle policy. If the vehicle cannot be repaired within 24 hours, Ezy will deliver a new vehicle within 24 hours.

• Ezy are a prominent 2nd tier company in New Zealand car rental industry and their great rates reflect this. They also offer a range of car hire ranging from cheap car rentals to luxury cars and 1st tier cars to suit special needs of clients.

• Ezy Rentals hires cars to 18 years+. In this case, the hire rates remain unchanged. It is the insurance excess that is slightly higher.

• Ezy car hire rates are inclusive of standard insurance, Goods and Sevices tax or GST and free 24 hour roadside assistance from AA.

• Ezy rentals offer a wide range of vehicles with baby bolts fitted so that baby
seats can be attached securely and safely. Ezy also hires out 3 different sized
baby seats and boosters to ensure that your child fits into it perfectly.

• Ezy Rentals has a wide variety of cars on offer from small hatchbacks to large sedans, station wagons and people movers

• Ezy Rentals does not have offices on either side. Hence it is best to take the car on the ferry. This makes it easy for the client. Ezy offers discounted ferry rates for its clients.

We have earned our reputation as a clean and honest car hire company in the New Zealand tourism industry. 30 Commonly Used Kiwi Slangs in New Zealand - Come in Handy for Your Daily Chats

Author: Doris Chow

Source: ezinearticles.com

Every country has their commonly used slang, and New Zealand is no exception. The first time I heard 'Sweet as' was on my first day in New Zealand, I was amused and wondered what it meant. Another time, I read the term 'backyard barbie' in the newspaper, and guess what, the image of a life-sized barbie doll in a garden appeared in my head. There are heaps more, but I listed only 30 common ones which can be handy for your daily chats, at least in the first few days.

Arvo - Short form for afternoon. E.g. meet you tomorrow arvo at 4(pm).

Ay/Eh - Used at the end of the sentence or a substitute of 'pardon' or 'what'. E.g. we should go Auckland this weekend ay.

Bach (pronounce as batch) - Holiday home. E.g. we stay at the bach at Whangaparaoa Peninsula during summer.

Barbie - Short form for barbeque. E.g. I am having a barbie at my backyard tomorrow, do you want to join us?

Brekkie - Short form for breakfast. E.g. shall we go for brekkie now?

Cheers/Cheerio - Thanks and/or goodbye. E.g. A: The train departure time is at 1pm. B: Cheers

Chips - Refer more commonly to French fries. E.g. Please help me to get some chips from the takeaway on your way back.

Dairy - 'Corner' store selling convenient food 7 days a week, a little like neighbourhood 7-11. E.g. I am going to the dairy to get some snacks, do you want anything?

Do - Sometimes refer to party or gathering. E.g. we are having our Christmas do on 20 December.

Dodgy - Describe something bad, unreliable, spoiled, strange, etc. E.g. that guy standing at the corner is dodgy. The food smells dodgy.

Dunny - Refer to the toilet, bathroom, lavatory. E.g. we have an outdoor dunny in our farm house.

Author: Paul J Easton

Source: ezinearticles.com

Imagine a place which you can enjoy equally all year round. You probably find this hard to do, but not if you have been to Queenstown, New Zealand. It is one of the country's most renowned mountain resorts. Is situated on the shores of the gorgeous Lake Wanaka and is surrounded by high mountain peaks. Its natural characteristics make Queenstown the perfect vacation place during the winter, spring, summer and autumn.

Queenstown is one of the most popular ski and snowboarding destinations in New Zealand. The temperature during the winter season, from June to September, rarely rises above 46 degrees F (8 degrees C). This guarantees that you can enjoy the most amazing skiing experience on the mile long ski slopes all day long during the entire winter season. Queenstown is not only a paradise for skiers and snowboarders. If you are up to an even more exciting adventure, you can readily try ice-climbing or riding a snowmobile. Those who are not fans of the snow and ice can readily enjoy a day soaking in a hot spa pool and getting the most relaxing treatments.

In spring, which lasts from September to December, you can enjoy the vibrant colors of the natural landscape in the Queenstown area. You can go mountain biking or hiking to get a taste of the true beauty of this mountain and lake region. A boat ride on the lake is an excellent way to spend a relaxing day. You can go canoeing, kayaking or fishing or play golf. If you are more into adventure, you should not hesitate to go bungy jumping, whitewater rafting or enjoy an exclusive jet boating trip.

You can enjoy great sunbaths in Queenstown during the summer, from December to March. The temperatures are warm enough, but you will never get to suffer from a great heat. You can readily enjoy a relaxing day on the beach and take a swim in the crystal clear waters of the lake. The summer is a great time to do all the outdoor sports activities and explore the great natural surrounding Queenstown has to offer. It is definitely a good idea to go hiking and to camp in the mountains.

The relatively warm autumn, between March and June, is full of color in Queenstown. This is a great time to enjoy mountain biking and to take walks near the lake and in the mountain. If the weather outside is chilly, you can readily enjoy a day at the spa or send time wine tasting.

New Zealand Walking - Seeing Things As They Are

Author: Tony Maniscalco

Source: ezinearticles.com

Few would dispute that New Zealand offers a unique and beautiful countryside coupled with a fascinating history and culture. One of the ways to best see it is through a New Zealand walking holiday.

What's there to see?

New Zealand is often described in terms of its two main islands. Many areas of the North Island have a distinctive 'Pacific Island' feel with beautiful beaches, luscious flora and a volcanic appearance to much of the countryside. It is home to the bulk of New Zealand's population and is proud of its multi-cultural status, and has a strong Maori legacy and presence. Auckland and Wellington are two major cities well worth exploring, as is Napier. Rotorua is world-famous for its geysers, hot steam vents and bubbling mud pools. The Bay of Islands contains marvellous opportunities for exploring the multitude of islets and sandy coves. Not to be missed also is the Tongariro National Park which contains stunning scenery.

The South Island is different! Much more sparsely populated, the island contains a vast range of natural spectacles including mountains, glaciers and fjords. It is home to the Southern Alps and some of the world's most breathtaking views of mountains, lakes and coastlines. The largest town is Christchurch and other major attractions include Mount Cook with its alpine scenery; Te Anau with its fjords; Queenstown with its scenery and adventure leisure opportunities; and the Fox and Franz Joseph glaciers. It's also an ideal opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife; including exotic birds such as the Albatross; and around the coastal areas, whales, dolphins and seals.

Both the North and South Islands received rave reviews for their stunning scenery when it was seen around the globe as the backdrop to the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. All these attractions are just a tiny sample of what a New Zealand walking holiday may be able to help you explore.

Why take a New Zealand walking holiday?

New Zealand is a beautiful country that has worked hard to keep its natural grandeur intact.

There are vast areas of nature that are relatively undeveloped and unspoilt by large-scale human encroachment. In some cases the only way to reach these magnificent sights is on foot. In other instances, you'll be more likely to appreciate the locations 'in context' if you've walked to them. New Zealand walking holidays in general are also becoming more popular for environmental reasons; and if you need yet more convincing, they may also be better for your general health!

How does the holiday work?

A New Zealand walking holiday is fully guided by a tour leader that is an expert in the route and the attractions as well as the local history and culture. They are constructed for those with only a moderate degree of fitness and walking ability. It is a carefully and expertly crafted holiday experience and not a forced route march - so no need to worry if you don't come into the 'superfit' category! Each guided walk is carefully planned to ensure that it is not overly demanding and that it concludes each day with the opportunity to relax and unwind in excellent accommodation. You can sample the excellent local cuisines while you reflect upon the sights you've seen during the day.

The holidays offer a variety of choices. So you may wish to be based in a single centre or to vary between different locations. You can decide to explore only one of the major islands or spend time or both. That is one of the major attractions of a New Zealand walking holiday - you can select an option that suits your interests and then with the help of your tour guide, follow it. It really can be a different and more satisfying sort of holiday.

How to Take a Driving Trip Through New Zealand

Author: Max Cowen

Source: ezinearticles.com

If you are planning a holiday to New Zealand then there are number of travel companies that will offer you some great New Zealand travel packages. You can back pack through the country, or hire a car or even undertake a motor home rental. Don t forget to pack your sense of adventure as that is the true way to see New Zealand. We think one of the best ways to see New Zealand is to drive yourself around. Be your own boss and follow your own itenary, now who wouldnt want to do that? While driving you can visit Rotorua on the North Island or visit one of the many vineyards, you could stop to go whale watching or dig into some yummy sea food at Kaiokoura on the South Island. These are just a few things you can include into yourself drive holiday but before you do so there is some planning to be done.

1. First you need to understand the way the Kiwis drive. They drive on the left hand side of the road in right hand drive vehicles. It can be a bit disconcerting initially, but you will soon get used to it. To hire a car you need to have a valid New Zealand, Australian or an International Driver s license in English and you need to be of 21 years minimum. Wearing a seatbelt is compulsory and no drinking and driving!

2. Insurance is a must. Make sure that you confirm all the insurance details and check if they are valid in New Zealand. Most car rental companies quote a basic coverage amount, but it is better to have an additional personal coverage so that you are taken care of in case of a mishap.

3. It is advisable that you plan for a lot of time in between the destinations as even though New Zealand has well maintained roads they are sometimes narrow and winding. Also if it is raining it can be slick and risky. Try and drive only mostly in the daytime to be on the safer side. Make sure that your car tyres are equipped with chains during winter on the South Island Roads.

4. A trip to the Information Center is advisable. You will get a wealth of information about what to do, where to go, what to see and how to get there. There are special maps formulated for people who want to hire a car in New Zealand for their holidays. Many centers also have internet facilities and bathroom facilities, which I am sure you will require.

5. You will need to book the ferry much in advance of your trip if you are going to travel from North Island to South Island. You can also take your car on board the ferry for an additional fee. You could also return your car and rent another one as soon as you reach your destination. If you are looking to hire a car in New Zealand then head to New Zealand Travels. New Zealand Walking Holidays - North Versus South

Author: Tony Maniscalco

Source: ezinearticles.com

If you are looking for a place that offers some of the most diverse and exciting countryside in the world, you need look no further than New Zealand. From high mountains to icy glaciers, lush forests to breathtaking fjords, a New Zealand walking holiday will give you plenty of great landscapes to enjoy. The countryside was spectacularly showcased in the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, where it provided many of the locations for the films, and it is now taking its place as one of the world's most beautiful places to go walking.

Of course, New Zealand is actually two islands, the North and South, and each one has its own unique attractions. Here are a few of the possible destinations you'll want to consider on each of the islands...

Walking on the North Island

The North Island is also home to the major cities of New Zealand including Auckland, Napier, Hamilton and the capital Wellington. So if you want to combine your time in the countryside with a break in the city on a New Zealand walking holiday, the North Island is the place to be.

While the attractions of the South Island are perhaps more famous, the North Island still has plenty of natural beauty to offer its visitors. The most famous landscape on the North Island is Rotorua. The city of Rotorua itself is one of the oldest Maori settlements, and it is built on a highly geothermally active area - the city itself is built into an enormous volcanic caldera. The surrounding area is filled with geysers, mud pools, thermal springs, and spectacular lakes that are a joy to explore on foot.

The other major attraction of the North Island is Tongariro National Park. New Zealand's oldest national park (established in 1887) is significant, both for its striking landscapes and for its spiritual significance to the Maori people. The park is placed in the very centre of the North Island, and its mountains, volcanos, lava fields, scrublands and forests can all be explored on a variety of walking routes.

Walking on the South Island

The South Island is a paradise for those who love the great outdoors. Not only is it larger than the North Island, it also has only a quarter of New Zealand's population, making for large stretches of deserted landscape for you to get away from the crowds.

It is also home to perhaps the most dramatic landscapes in New Zealand. The colossal Fox Glacier is located on the west coast. Not only is it a stunning sight in its own right, this ice sheet has carved out some great walking country in the surrounding area. In particular, don't miss out on Lake Matheson, a crystal clear lake ringed by rainforest where New Zealand's two highest peaks, Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, are perfectly reflected in the water.

Elsewhere on the island, the hills of the Queenstown area will be instantly familiar to many - they were used for many of the outdoor locations in 'The Lord of the Rings'. It's a suitably epic landscape, providing excellent opportunities for hikers and a wide range of other adventure sports (such as skiing, mountain biking, and paragliding).

Finally, the Fjordland World Heritage Site provides some of the finest walking in New Zealand. If you base yourself in the pleasant town of Te Anau, all of the attractions in the region are within easy reach. These include the vertical cliffs and waterfalls of the Milford Sound, the serene beauty of the Doubtful Sound, the dramatic spectacle of Mitre Peak, and the stunning Lake Manapouri.

North or South - whichever island you choose to visit on a New Zealand walking holiday, you'll be treated to spectacular landscapes and great walking routes. And if you've got the time, make sure you visit them both...

New Zealand Is For Lovers - Of Adventure, That Is: Travel To New Zealand

Author: Frank Johnson

Source: articledashboard.com

Although often times in the gigantic shadow of its Australian neighbor, New Zealand is worlds apart from any experience found elsewhere and it is geographically much farther southeast than most people imagine. New Zealand is a former British colony, with fascinating cultural influences due to its location in southern Polynesia. Large swaths of rolling green meadows, churning geysers, creaking glaciers, and never-ending stretches of magical overgrown beaches encourage travelers to make the long haul across oceans to indulge in the disarming natural beauty of New Zealand year after year.

New Zealand was one of the last landmasses to be inhabited, only discovered in 800 AD by Polynesian navigator Kupe. The discovery initiated a steady stream of migration from today's French Polynesia until Dutch Abel Tasman and finally James Cook came across the islands and claimed them for the British Crown, ruled from Australia. The native Maori people are still a considerable minority, enriching the cultural climate of the largely European (Pakeha) nation.

Cinematic Sanctuaries and Bungy* Jumping Buffs
New Zealand's geography is divided into two major north-south islands. Depending on where you travel and the time of year, the activities and topography will change dramatically. The South Island is famous for its unique relics of the last Ice Age, the Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers, which plunge just below the islands tallest peak in the Southern Alps, Mount Cook. These glaciers are particularly spectacular because they continue to flow through temperate rainforest strikingly close to sea level. Winter in the Alps region is excellent for skiing, mountaineering and filmmaking - scenes from The Chronicles of Narnia were filmed here. For a thrilling wildlife experience, do not miss the South Island's Otago Peninsula where you can enjoy a cozy bed and breakfast among sea lion, sea elephant and penguin habitats, to name a few.

The North Island is relatively warmer during the summer and milder all year long. Put yourself 'on edge' with a trip to serene Lake Taupo, which also happens to fill the caldera of one of the largest super-volcanoes in the world. Extreme outdoor sports abound on both islands, as New Zealand is the original inventor of Bungy Jumping (also found at Lake Taupo) among other creatively dangerous activities. The west coasts are extremely popular for black water rafting, otherwise known as cave rafting. This exhilarating experience should not be missed, even by the beginner. If a new heart rate is not what you are looking for, make your leisurely way to Ninety Mile Beach at the very north end of the island; the name is not deceiving and the experience is absolute paradise in the summer months. The Great Barrier Island to the east is a mind blowing underwater experience for most scuba divers and an equally sensational getaway for the sand-bound.

New Zealand is a destination for all seasons, with activities spanning the elements and progressive cities to keep up with those of faster pace. Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown are all very youthful and spirited cities with the distinct eclecticism of New Zealand culture to overload the senses and invigorate the spirit. New Zealand may be far from most places in the world, but it is certainly worth any length of travel to reap the fruit of this nation's existence. Travel to New Zealand and experience it all for yourself.

It may be at the end of the earth for many international travelers but in a lot of ways that's part of the reason it's so great. I can't guarantee that you'll run into pirates on your travels through Christchurch but I can assure you of a truly unforgettable experience.

Christchurch is in the heart of New Zealand's South Island, far removed from the overcrowded tourist hot spots of Europe, fighting in the Middle East and pollution in Asia. This is an area of rare beauty, offering visitors the chance to experience the snow capped ski fields of the Southern Alps one day and swim with dolphins the next.

New Zealand & Australia, aren't they the same place?

New Zealand is often linked hand in hand with Australia and while they share a lot of cultural similarities, there are huge differences when it comes to why you would visit either. Australia is a South Pacific getaway blessed with beautiful beaches, friendly people and a whole lot of nothing called the outback. New Zealand shares the friendly people but offers a different experience, rich in cultural history, adrenaline pumping adventure sport, spectacular sightseeing, memorable landscapes and unique wildlife.

Christchurch encapsulates all things good about New Zealand and serves them to you on a plate, a new and exciting attraction never more than a couple of hours away. If you've seen the Lord of the Rings movies then you might have noticed some of the amazing environments that cover the New Zealand's South Island. These were no CGI special effects; all these places are just a stone throw from Christchurch and can be part of an amazing vacation, holiday or tour. Be the envy of your friends as you showoff your vacation pictures with pride.

Christchurch sightseeing & attractions

Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region has a strong English heritage and much of this still remains in the city area. Visitors can enjoy a punt along the Avon River, a sightseeing experience on the Tramway or Gondola, a stroll through the majestic Hagley Park or delight in the wonderful Botanical Gardens. Christchurch is New Zealand's garden city and proudly displays this in the sheer number of beautiful gardens citywide.

New Zealand's unique location on the globe has led to Christchurch becoming the world's link to Antarctica. This amazing continent of frozen ice can be experienced from Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre. More than just learning about Antarctica, visitors can experience icy slopes, sheltering in an ice cave, braving an Antarctic storm and many more fun activities.

Venturing out of Christchurch, head towards the charming French influenced town of Akaroa. Just an hour's drive from Christchurch, Akaroa is located on the South Island's Banks Peninsula, an amazing area where numerous outdoor activities can be enjoyed year round. Kayak along an extinct volcano, hike through beautiful walking tracks, enjoy spectacular harbour cruises, mountain bike along coastal hills and enjoy the magical experience of swimming with dolphins. Akaroa's rich cultural history complements these activities and creates an experience that alone makes a trip to Christchurch worthwhile.

Christchurch adventure sport

So you've taken in the sights, experienced the city and seen the surrounding areas, what's next you ask? Well why not try the uniquely New Zealand experience of adventure sport! Strap on a parachute, hook on a bungy chord, clip on some skis and hold on for some exhilarating jet boating, white water rafting and more! Christchurch is a stones throw from all these fun adventure sports and more, you don't have to be a pro athlete to enjoy them and they'll be something you'll remember for the rest of your life. Feel the rush as you jump head first from a bridge or plane and let the wild rivers of New Zealand give you the rush of a lifetime as you surge down rapids on a jet boating or rafting adventure. There are a lot of quality tour options available and you'll enjoy the experience even more as you meet new faces and friendly characters along the way.

If you want something unique and adventurous in a world that is fast losing new and exciting destinations then head to Christchurch, New Zealand. Whether it's part of wider New Zealand experience or a specific South Island adventure, you won't be disappointed. Head to the edge of the earth and see a world you never knew existed. If Middle Earth were truly real you would find it right here in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Festive New Zealand

Author: Richard Greaves

Source: articledashboard.com

New Zealand is a land in the far south where immigrant cultures were grafted onto a Polynesian landscape. This makes for a colourful culture replete with festivals of all kinds. There are festivals marking special days in the country's colonial history, events that celebrate the indigenous Polynesian culture and still others that commemorate New Zealand's rich agricultural traditions.

New Zealand celebrates its history on the last Monday in January with the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta. This colourful, nautical event commemorates the arrival of Captain Hobson in New Zealand when he founded the city of Auckland.

The Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta dates back to 1840 which makes it the country's oldest sporting event. Predating the Americas Cup by 11 years, the Auckland Anniversary Regatta draws around 400 competing boats each year.

New Zealand's Polynesian roots are celebrated at the Pasifika Festival held at Auckland's Western Springs Stadium in March. The event celebrates the art, culture and lifestyle of the South Pacific through music and other performances.

First produced by Auckland City Council in 1993, Pasifika has grown over the years and now attracts more than 225000 visitors who come to enjoy the work of hundreds of performers from the Auckland region as well as the Pacific area.

The event kicks off on a Friday night with an opening concert from Air New Zealand. The main event starts of the Saturday and comprises around 300 food and craft stalls.

A popular addition to Pasifika was made in 1999 in the form of cultural villages. These showcase unique aspects of various Pacific Island communities. Each village presents a traditional and contemporary programme including music, dancing, workshops, and food.

In 2008, Wellington introduced its own Pasifika featuring exhibitors from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu, the Cook Islands, Tokelau and Niue displaying traditional handicrafts such as embroidery, weaving, shell jewellery and wood carving.

Agriculture is at the heart of the New Zealand economy so it's no wonder that one of the country's most important festivals covers farming and rural life. It's the Royal New Zealand Show held over three days each November. With the theme of 'Bringing the country to town', the Show is held at Canterbury Agricultural Park, Wigram Road, Christchurch.

Featuring both indoor and outdoor displays and exhibitions, the Royal New Zealand Show attracts well over 100,000 visitors each year. Displays include marquees and pavilions showcasing the very best of New Zealand farming and rural life, top entertainment, and numerous other attractions. The event draws 5000 livestock entries and more than 400 exhibitors.

The Royal New Zealand Show was first held in 1924. Formerly held in rotation with Palmerston North, Hawke's Bay, Hamilton, Invercargill and Christchurch, the show has been held at the Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch since 2006.

New Zealand is a fascinating country but attending a festival can give you special insights into this antipodean nation

Author: Trisha Garbrick

New Zealand's North Island is the smaller of the two main islands; however, it holds approximately 76 percent of New Zealand's population. The North Island is also the warmer of the two, with a temperate to subtropical climate. It boasts warm sandy beaches, rolling farmlands, forests and dormant volcanoes. Two of the country's biggest cities are located on the North Island: Auckland, and the capitol city of Wellington.

Auckland, often referred to as the City of Sails, is the largest city in New Zealand, with a population of approximately 1.4 million. Auckland lies between the Waitemata and Manukau Harbors, bordering the rain forest and several dormant volcanoes. Auckland has something to offer everyone, including an array of outdoor activities, art and culture venues, shopping, dining and night life.

The Sky Tower is a 1,076-foot-tall observation and communications tower located in the heart of Auckland. This iconic tower is the tallest free-standing structure in the southern hemisphere! Caution When Shopping For New Zealand Gifts

Author: David A King

Source: ezinearticles.com

Beware of the Asian invasion when it comes to the design, making and selling of New Zealand gifts. Many of the so called "New Zealand Gift shops" are full of NZ designs copied and made in Asia. There was a recent article in the New Zealand Herald that was written by a Chinese man who was visiting New Zealand for the first time who was appalled at the Asian organized tourism which directed him and other overseas visitors into Asian owned hotels onto Asian transport and into New Zealand gift shops that were full of Asian produced counterfeit stock. He wanted to experience New Zealand, share time with its people and buy gifts that where truly New Zealand made items,

There is a risk that some areas of New Zealand have lost their Kiwi identity with central Auckland being one of the worst hit. There are pockets of old New Zealand shopping left in and around Auckland. Devonport is a good example with its historic buildings and originality and being only a short ferry ride from downtown Auckland it is worth a visit. Some of the suburbs are still true to their kiwi identity and offer an insight into the kiwi culture and Orewa, Warkworth Titirangi, and Pukekohe are good examples.

Try to hunt out the true kiwi gift shops before parting with your money a good example is Gecko Unique Gifts of New Zealand who have shops in Devonport and Orewa and a very good web site, They have history and specialize in New Zealand gifts and where possible always stock New Zealand made or designed product. If you plan to visit New Zealand take care to identify businesses that are genuine Kiwi and take home a truly New Zealand made gift for family and friends back home. When you do so you also help develop the New Zealand eco tourism by reducing our carbon footprint and the worlds land fill.

Gecko Unque Gifts of New Zealand have a wide range of New Zealand made and designed gifts for your selection. We have Jewellery by Boh Runga and others, Possum Merino wool garments by Koru, Ceramics and Kauri wood items by New Zealand artists, and heaps more.

Renting A Motor Home To Travel New Zealand

Author: Mike Philips

Source: articledashboard.com

Whether you crave a holiday full of outdoor adventure or a relaxing vacation sampling gourmet cuisine and award winning wines, New Zealand has something for everyone. And, there is no better way to explore this highly diverse country than to rent a New Zealand motor home. With many tourist destinations within a few hours of each other and a well-maintained network of roads and highways, renting a motor home or camper van in New Zealand provides travelers the freedom and flexibility to experience all of the sites and attractions while enjoying all of the comforts of a home on wheels.

With many companies specialising in renting motor homes in New Zealand, it's helpful to compare prices and availability on the internet. Rates tend to be higher during the summer months of December through February, and the best deals are to be had from May through September. Reputable rental companies will offer comprehensive insurance, roadside assistance, and 24-hour customer service. Other features that are also frequently offered when renting a camper van in New Zealand include itinerary planning, kitchen utensils, linens, unlimited mileage, ferry booking assistance, airport pickup, and luggage storage.

Camp ground facilities throughout New Zealand are generally very well maintained and in convenient, and often times, scenic locations. Along with BBQs, kitchen facilities, restrooms and showers, most campgrounds have laundry rooms and playgrounds. It's always a good idea to reserve space at a campground prior to arrival, especially during the peak season of summer. Although most New Zealand motor homes and camper vans have a shower and toilet on board, it is illegal to discharge this waste into anything other than an approved dump station. Keep New Zealand clean and green. Should you dump the waste elsewhere it will end up in out pristine waterways. The main pick up and drop off cities for a New Zealand motor home or a New Zealand camper van are Auckland and Christchurch, although some companies have an office in Wellington, Picton or Queenstown. One way hires have a minimum hire period. It is also legal to park motor homes in New Zealand on national park land as long as there is not a "Parking Prohibited" sign posted.

Most first time visitors of New Zealand visit both the North and South islands to experience the vastly different landscapes. Camper vans and motor homes can be conveniently driven onto the Interislander ferry for the three hour journey between the islands. Most rental companies will gladly book reservations for the ferry and provide you with all of the information that you will need prior to setting sail.

When touring the stunning beauty of the South Island, it's especially important to be aware of the weather. Snow frequently falls in the winter months, and chains are required on some roads. The speed limit on New Zealand open roads is 100 km or about 62 miles per hour. To have a safe motoring holiday, it's essential to stay within the speed limit and to obey all of the traffic signs. Many of the roads, while well paved and signed, are somewhat narrow and often slick from rain or ice. Photo radar is used throughout the country to enforce the speed limits, and there are strict laws forbidding drinking and driving.

New Zealand is an amazing country with plenty to offer every traveler, and motor homes and camper vans allow the convenience, comfort, and flexibility to make the most of your holiday. Without wasting time checking into hotels or unpacking and packing up cars and suitcases, you can spend your time enjoying the sites and relaxing in your home on wheels. Happy Motoring!

Holidays in New Zealand South Island and North Island

Author: Bea Metcalfe

Source: ezinearticles.com

New Zealand didn't get the title 'Adventure Capital of the World' from promoting sock darning classes -- No Sir-eee, this title comes from the layout of high mountains off which glaciers roll, vast craggy gorges and lakes, and wide open space that make the whole country seem like a giant's Adventure Playground. And extreme sports peeps can't help but heed the call and want to spend their holidays in New Zealand and particularly South Island.

Bungee jumping, in its modern form, was invented in New Zealand, so it's the perfect introduction to all holidays in New Zealand. So was black water rafting, but this playground is also known for extreme staples: jet boating, white water rafting, heli bungy, tandem parapenting, tandem skydiving, heliskiing, snowkiting, snowboarding, sand yachting, zorbing, sphere-ing, rock climbing and abseiling, canyoning, and more gentle pastimes, kayaking, cycling or mountain biking and trekking: all worth considering when planning holidays in New Zealand.

This South Island extreme adventure itinerary is an extremely scenic model to base your own extreme holidays in New Zealand around.

Day 1: Wellington -- Nelson Many holidays in New Zealand start in Wellington, North Island, and from there head out across the Cook Strait, passing between the Marlborough Sounds to Nelson -- maybe doing a spot of fishing, or kayaking or wreck diving on your way.

Day 2 & 3: Abel Tasman National Park An unmissable part of any holidays in New Zealand, days in the Able Tasman National Park are for kayaking and walking in an extremely beautiful setting.

Day 4 - 6: Via the blowholes at Punakaiki to the Franz Joseph Glacier On the way past Punakiki to Franz Josef stop off at the Pancake Rocks, eroded rock formations that facilitate some very impressive ocean v. blowhole action, and not something most holidays in New Zealand factor time for, then spend a couple of days around the glacier cross county quad biking, ice climbing or rafting - or even heli-rafting - on the river. The face of the Franz Joseph glacier is constantly changing, it's one of the world's only advancing glaciers -- it can move up to 70cms a day - and the walk up to its icefields and icefells is though temperate rainforest, rising almost 2500m in under 12 kms. If the half day glacial hike up it, over its ice fields on the way, sounds a little too easy for your extreme holidays in New Zealand, opt for the heli-hiking option -- you do the work on the way up and then get lifted down over some spectacular scenes -- bound to be a highlight for holidays in New Zealand.

Day 7: Lake Wanaka In winter Lake Wanaka is the ultimate wintersports holidays in New Zealand destination, come on down skiers! cross country and otherwise, snowboarders! for the snow park and ice climbers. In summer it's time for fishing, swimming, boating and of course jet boating holidays in New Zealand.

Day 8 - 10: Queenstown and Milford Sound Queenstown has more than once been referred to as 'the Adventure Capital of the Adventure Capital'. This town has the original commercial bungee jump, as well as one of the highest - if that's not high enough go skydiving! Or try something new on your holidays in New Zealand and get catapulted about on the Shotover Canyon Swing - it's like a huge fairground ride - go high-wire-bungee-ing, try canyoning, or heli-mountain biking. There are a lot of sports that New Zealanders like to add the word 'heli' to the front of. In winter there's extreme wintersports to keep you entertained in Queenstown as well. Milford Sound is close by if you prefer extreme watersports.

Day 11: Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook Climbing Mt. Cook or heli-climbing her is one of the highlights of spending your holidays in New Zealand -- either way this snowy peak is a spectacular view -- but for an even more extreme view skydive over her.

Day 12: Christchurch Surf, do the rapids at Rangitata Gorge, or recover.

New Zealand - Why Choose New Zealand As a Holiday Destination?

Author: Cynthia Marsh

Source: ezinearticles.com

So you are planning your next holiday and you cannot work out where you would like to go? Have you ever thought of New Zealand as a holiday destination?

The flying time from the United Kingdom is around 24 hours, which may seem daunting, but once you arrive in New Zealand there are such a wide range of activities, attractions and accomodation on offer that you will not regret the time you spent in the air. If you have the time, arranging a stopover in Singapore, Malaysia or Hong Kong can break the journey and add another exciting element to your holiday.

New Zealand is situated in the South Pacific Ocean, and consists of two islands, the North Island and the South Island. The weather varies from being mainly sub-tropical in the North Island to temperate in the South Island. However, there are a lot of regional variations and the weather can change very rapidly in the space of twenty four hours. The weather in the summer tends to be more settled, and you can expect to be able to enjoy long, hot sunny days on the beach. In the winter, it can be very wet and cold, but there is superb skiing and winter sports in the mountains, with Queenstown being the main centre.

There is a wide range of accommodation available in New Zealand. This ranges from top quality hotels, to self-catering cabins and backpacker hostels. Travelling around is also very simple. Hire a car or a camper van and 'do it yourself'. A ferry will take you and your vehicle between the North Island at Wellington and Picton on the South Island. There are several international and domestic airports, so flying is a quick way to get to your destination. There is also a rail network, and if you want to sit back and watch some of new Zealand's stunning scenery go past, book a ticket on the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth. There are also several bus companies like the 'Magic Bus' who do regular routes around the most popular spots on both islands, and will even book your hostel accommodation for you and take you to local attractions.

New Zealand was originally colonised by the Maori people from Polynesia about 1200 years ago, and the first European to reach New Zealand was probably the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in the 1640s. New Zealand was rediscovered by Captain Cook in the eighteenth century and European settlers began to arrive. If you are interested in learning more about Maori culture, there are many Maori Cultural Centres across New Zealand, from the Waitangi Treaty Grounds overlooking the Bay of Islands in the North Island to the Tamaki Maori Villages in Rotorua and Christchurch.

If you like outdoors activities you have a plethora of to choose from. There are many miles of walking tracks that offer good hiking and camping. Or if you prefer to be on the water go kayaking, sailing, white water rafting, water skiing and windsurfing. If you really like to get the adrenaline pumping, Queenstown is home to the original bungy jump, AJ Hackett, and you can plunge head first into a river canyon or drop off the side of a cliff. To keep the heart rate up, there is also jet boating, sky diving, quad biking and Zorb globe riding!

New Zealand also has a lot to offer nature lovers. There are many opportunities in centres such as Pahia and Kaikoura to go out whale and dolphin watching. You can even go swimming with the dolphins. Dunedin offers visits to the only mainland breeding colony of Royal Albatross, and there are many places on the coast where you can spot penguin and seal colonies. There are many centres where you can go and see the native wildlife such as kiwis, tuatara and kea. Visit the Southern Encounter Aquarium and Kiwi Experience in Christchurch, the Kiwi Birdlife Park in Queenstown or the Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre. There are also several zoos in New Zealand; Hamilton Zoo, Orana Wildlife Park in Christchurch, Wellington Zoo and Auckland Zoo. New Zealand is also a paradise for fishing; with many opportunities for fresh water and sea fishing.

New Zealand is very volcanically active and there are many geothermal parks and hot springs to enjoy. Watch the mud boiling, the steam rising from the rocks, and the geysers spewing in the Rotorua region. Even on a cold winter day, enjoy a wallow in a deliciously warm, naturally heated hot pool, maybe followed by a massage or other beauty treatment?

Farming is one of the backbones of the New Zealand economy and there are many opportunities to enjoy farm experiences or farm stays where you can see the farm in action and watch the sheep shearing and other farm activities. New Zealand is also famous for its wine; and in the major wine producing regions there are many wine-tasting tours going out where you can sample the wines and purchase those you have enjoyed.

There are many unique experiences that only New Zealand has to offer. Go black water rafting through the caves of Waitomo or enjoy a gentler trip through the magical, sparkling glow worm caves. Try sand boarding down one of the massive dunes at Ninety Mile Beach or simply find a nice spot in the sun to read and have a coffee.
